Kashmiri saffron grows on the raised plateaus around Pampore. The crocus flowers for only a few weeks each autumn, and every stigma is separated by hand — which is why real saffron is precious, and why imitations are common.

Fine pashmina begins as the winter undercoat of Changthangi goats in Ladakh. In Srinagar it is hand-spun, handwoven and often embroidered over months. A genuine piece is light, warm and lasts for generations.

Carvers in the old city shape walnut wood into chinar leaves and lattices; papier-mâché artists layer and paint by hand. These crafts are passed from parent to child, and each piece is a little different.
